For decades, the Marin Audubon Society has sought to consolidate stewardship over the county’s forests and wetlands, but never before has it issued such ruthless reprisals. On Sunday, more than a dozen individuals from competing non-profits were targeted by the organization in a tightly choreographed attack. Police say it was the bloodiest weekend in Marin County since the infamous “Newt Dispute” at Lake Lagunitas in 2007.

In the wake of the violence, M.A.S. foot soldiers posted videos on social media taunting their adversaries, boasting about their restoration of local habitats and boldly announcing that the field trip to the Headlands this Saturday was still “on like donkey-kong.”
