Whereas many towns in Marin tout their bucolic surroundings or charming downtowns, the people of Corte Madera take pride in their unrivalled array of furniture outlets. “Our community is honored to offer shoppers the widest possible selection of aspirational home goods,” said the town’s mayor.

Boasting a Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, RH, Ethan Allen, Arhuas, Anthem, Container Store and even a La-Z-Boy location, the town’s entire identity seems to have been subsumed by the decor industry. But nothing could make Corte Maderans more proud.  “We want to be remembered as the place where you got a credenza, hopefully on sale,” said Greer Horbin, a long-time resident.

And by the way, he says, the astonishing array of options isn’t just for out-of-towners. Families here traditionally spend their Sundays shopping for throw pillows and jute rugs, and by elementary school most children are already saving up for their first sectional. “That’s our real passion,” added Horbin. “Couches.”
