Marin residents have long argued that the moniker widely used to refer to them in the media is hurtful, embarrassing and borders on hate speech. Now the county’s superior court has ruled in their favor. “The fact that no one would ever self-identity as a 'Marinite' — despite there being no viable alternative – speaks volumes about the pejorative nature of this term,” read the jurist's opinion.

The judge, however, added that there would likely never be a good way to disclose the fact that you hail from this area. "'I live in Tiburon' or 'We're from Mill Valley' isn't exactly a great opener, either," said the justice. "Ultimately, any indication that you live in Marin is likely to generate significant blowback."
