With its big-box stores, unchecked sprawl and affordable housing, Novato has never quite fit in with the rest of Marin County. Now, officials have voted to let the town go. “This isn’t the end of Novato,” said Marin’s County Commissioner. “It will continue to exist, as it has for all these years. But we don’t think it makes sense to renew its membership after the current cycle.” In the wake of the news, residents from across the county arrived to pay their respects to the unwanted town. "I don't plan on saying goodbye to Novato," said Matt Brown, of Fairfax, while loading stacks of Spindrift and toilet paper into his SUV. "Because this is where the Costco is."
